Key Information
Salario Mínimo Interprofesional (SMI)
The SMI is Spain's statutory minimum wage, set annually by the government. It applies to all workers regardless of sector and is adjusted based on productivity, inflation, and economic conditions.
14 Payments System
In Spain, salaries are typically paid in 14 installments per year. The SMI of €1,221/month is paid 14 times, giving an annual total of €17,094. The extra two payments (pagas extra) are usually in June and December.
Tax-Free SMI
The Spanish minimum wage is exempt from income tax (IRPF). Workers earning only the SMI do not need to file tax returns unless they have other income sources.
Coverage
The SMI applies to all workers aged 18 and over. Domestic workers and agricultural workers are also covered. Some collective agreements may establish higher minimum wages.
