Key Information
Salário Mínimo Nacional (SMN)
The Portuguese national minimum wage is set annually by government decree. It applies to all full-time workers in the private sector and has seen significant increases in recent years as part of the government's wage growth policy.
14 Payments System
In Portugal, salaries are paid in 14 installments per year. The monthly minimum of €920 is paid 14 times, giving an annual total of €12,880. The extra payments are the Christmas subsidy (subsídio de Natal) and the holiday subsidy (subsídio de férias).
IRS Exemption
Workers earning the minimum wage are exempt from income tax (IRS) withholding. This means the net take-home pay is only reduced by social security contributions (11% for employees).
Coverage
The minimum wage applies to all full-time private-sector employees. Domestic workers are also covered. The autonomous regions of Madeira and Azores may set different rates.
