Key Information
SMIC (Salaire Minimum Interprofessionnel de Croissance)
The SMIC is France's statutory minimum wage, indexed to inflation and adjusted annually on January 1st. Additional increases may occur if inflation exceeds 2% during the year.
35-Hour Work Week
France's legal work week is 35 hours. The monthly SMIC is calculated as: hourly rate × 35 hours × (52 weeks / 12 months) = 151.67 hours per month. Hours above 35 are considered overtime with premium pay.
Coverage
The SMIC applies to all employees aged 18 and over in the private sector. Young workers under 18 may receive reduced rates: 90% at age 17 and 80% at age 16.
Social Contributions
Employees earning SMIC benefit from reduced social contributions through various government schemes. Net take-home pay is approximately 75-80% of gross.
